Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Symantec Data Center Security. This affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
SQL injection vulnerability in the management server in Symantec Critical System Protection (SCSP) 5.2.9 before MP6 and Symantec Data Center Security: Server Advanced (SDCS:SA) 6.0.x before 6.0 MP1 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary SQL commands via a crafted HTTP request.
The weakness was presented 01/21/2015 by Stefan Viehböck with SEC-CONSULT (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-7289 since 10/02/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 5 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81549 (Symantec Data Center Security Server SQLi (SYM15-001)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123278 (Symantec Data Center Security: Server Advanced and Symantec Critical System Protection Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 6.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100358), Exploit-DB (35915), Tenable (81549), SecurityFocus (BID 72092†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49133†).
