A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GNU patch 2.7.1. This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. GNU patch 2.7.1 allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files via a symlink attack in a patch file.
The weakness was shared 01/21/2015 by Jakub Wilk as Bug 1182154 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-1196 since 01/18/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
