A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office up to 2013 SP1 (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Office File Handler. The weakness was disclosed 03/10/2015 by Noam Rathaus (SecuriTeam) with Beyond Security's SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure as MS15-022 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure. It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-0097 since 11/18/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Eduardo Braun Prado and been published 5 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81757 (MS15-022: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3038999)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110251 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-022)).
Applying the patch MS15-022 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
