A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP 5.4/5.5/5.6 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file phar_object.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 03/10/2015 by Xinchen Hui as Bug 1194747 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-2301 since 03/15/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82856 (Amazon Linux AMI : php54 (ALAS-2015-509)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. Upgrading to version 5.6.6, 5.5.22 or 5.4.38 eliminates this vulnerability.
