Oracle MySQL Server up to 5.1.66/5.5.28 Privileges memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Oracle MySQL Server up to 5.1.66/5.5.28 (Database Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Privileges. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the acl_get function in Oracle MySQL 5.5.19 and other versions through 5.5.28, and 5.1.53 and other versions through 5.1.66, and MariaDB 5.5.2.x before 5.5.28a, 5.3.x before 5.3.11, 5.2.x before 5.2.13 and 5.1.x before 5.1.66, allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a long argument to the GRANT FILE command.

The weakness was published 01/15/2013 by kingcope as cpujan2013-1515902 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at oracle.com. The public release has been coordinated with Oracle. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5611 since 10/24/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by kingcope in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69635 (Amazon Linux AMI : mysql51 (ALAS-2012-145)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19831 (Oracle MySQL January 2013 Critical Patch Update).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12692.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (23075), Tenable (69635), SecurityFocus (BID 56769†), OSVDB (88066†) and Secunia (SA51443†). isc.sans.edu is providing further details.
