Canonical Ubuntu Linux up to 12.3 Library closefs.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Canonical Ubuntu Linux up to 12.3 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the file closefs.c of the component Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in closefs.c in the libext2fs library in e2fsprogs before 1.42.12 allows local users to execute arbitrary code by causing a crafted block group descriptor to be marked as dirty. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2015-0247.

The weakness was shared 02/24/2015 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-1572 since 02/10/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82321 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : e2fsprogs (MDVSA-2015:068)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167996 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for e2fsprogs (SUSE-SU-2015:1364-1)).

Upgrading to version 12.04 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (82321), SecurityFocus (BID 72709†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-48884†). The entry VDB-74221 is related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
