repository/s3/S3.php in the Amazon S3 library in Moodle through 2.2.11, 2.3.x before 2.3.9, 2.4.x before 2.4.6, and 2.5.x before 2.5.2 does not verify that the server hostname matches a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) or subjectAltName field of the X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers via an arbitrary valid certificate, related to an incorrect CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYHOST value.
The weakness was published 01/17/2013 by Andrew Saunders as not defined blog post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at daniel.haxx.se. The public release has been coordinated with Moodle. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-6087 since 12/06/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:repository/s3/S3.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64268 (Fedora 17 : moodle-2.2.7-1.fc17 (2013-0968)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 5.3.21 or 5.4.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
