Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Dell SonicWALL GMS, ViewPoint and UMA up to 7.0 (Firewall Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Authentication Handler. The manipulation of the argument skipSessionCheck with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. The bug was discovered 04/26/2012. The weakness was released 01/17/2013 by Nikolas Sotiriu as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sotiriu.de. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1359 since 01/14/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/28/2024).
A public exploit has been developed by Nikolas Sotiriu and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. By approaching the search of allinurl:sgms/auth it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87157 (Multiple SonicWALL Products Authentication Bypass Vulnerability).
Applying the patch 125076.77 is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13940.
