A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in EMC AlphaStor 4.0. This affects the function _vsnsprintf of the file rrobotd.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a format string vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-134. The product uses a function that accepts a format string as an argument, but the format string originates from an external source. Format string vulnerability in the _vsnsprintf function in rrobotd.exe in the Device Manager in EMC AlphaStor 4.0 before build 800 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in a command.
The weakness was presented 01/18/2013 by Aniway.Anyway with Zero Day Initiative as ESA-2012-008 as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with EMC. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0929 since 01/09/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120877 (EMC AlphaStor Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 4.0 build 800 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13030.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81433), SecurityFocus (BID 57472†), OSVDB (89435†), Secunia (SA51930†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028020†).
