A vulnerability has been found in Google Chrome up to 41.0.2272.x (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file gpu/command_buffer/service/gles2_cmd_decoder.cc of the component OpenGL ES. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. Race condition in gpu/command_buffer/service/gles2_cmd_decoder.cc in Google Chrome before 41.0.2272.118 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact by manipulating OpenGL ES commands.
The weakness was disclosed 04/01/2015 by lokihardt with Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1234 since 01/21/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82534 (Google Chrome < 41.0.2272.118 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196057 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Oxide-qt Vulnerabilities (USN-2556-1)).
Upgrading to version 41.0.2272.118 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19621.
