Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in the WebGUI in pfSense before 2.2.1 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) zone parameter to status_captiveportal.php; (2) if or (3) dragtable parameter to firewall_rules.php; (4) queue parameter in an add action to firewall_shaper.php; (5) id parameter in an edit action to services_unbound_acls.php; or (6) filterlogentries_time, (7) filterlogentries_sourceipaddress, (8) filterlogentries_sourceport, (9) filterlogentries_destinationipaddress, (10) filterlogentries_interfaces, (11) filterlogentries_destinationport, (12) filterlogentries_protocolflags, or (13) filterlogentries_qty parameter to diag_logs_filter.php.

The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. A public exploit has been developed by High-Tech Bridge SA and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106493 (pfSense < 2.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SA-15_02 - SA-15_04)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 34070 (pfSense Multiple Vulnerabilities (pfSense-SA-15_04,pfSense-SA-15_03)).
Upgrading to version 2.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
