A vulnerability was found in pfSense up to 2.2.0 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the file system_firmware_restorefullbackup.php of the component WebGUI. The manipulation of the argument deletefile with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in system_firmware_restorefullbackup.php in the WebGUI in pfSense before 2.2.1 allows remote attackers to hijack the authentication of administrators for requests that delete arbitrary files via the deletefile parameter.
The weakness was published 04/10/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at pfsense.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-2295 since 03/14/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. A public exploit has been developed by High-Tech Bridge SA and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 15 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:system_firmware_restorefullbackup.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106493 (pfSense < 2.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (SA-15_02 - SA-15_04)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 34070 (pfSense Multiple Vulnerabilities (pfSense-SA-15_04,pfSense-SA-15_03)).
Upgrading to version 2.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
