This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0098 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Multiple vulnerabilities existed in Apache versions prior to 2.4.10 and 2.2.29, including one that may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code. These issues were addressed by updating Apache to versions 2.4.10 and 2.2.29
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73265 (Fedora 20 : httpd-2.4.9-2.fc20 (2014-4555)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 105728 (EOL/Obsolete Software: Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x).
Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20038.
