Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component OpenSSL. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3571. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 (Operating System). This affects some unknown processing of the component OpenSSL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was published 04/08/2015 by Markus Stenberg with Cisco Systems as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3571 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
Multiple vulnerabilities existed in OpenSSL 0.9.8zc, including one that may allow an attacker to intercept connections to a server that supports export-grade ciphers. These issues were addressed by updating OpenSSL to version 0.9.8zd.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81303 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : OpenSSL vulnerability (SOL16123)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185099 (HP-UX Running OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX03244)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (81303), SecurityFocus (BID 71937†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1032048†). Similar entries are available at VDB-68514, VDB-68516, VDB-68517 and VDB-68518. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
