The Code Signing implementation in Apple OS X before 10.10.3 does not properly validate signatures, which allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions via a crafted bundle, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-1145.
The weakness was shared 04/08/2015 by Ole Andre Vadla Ravnas (lokihardt@ASRT) with Google Project Zero as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-1146 since 01/16/2015. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82699 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (FREAK)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123515 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.3 and Security Update 2015-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-04-08-2)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
