Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 UniformTypeIdentifiers memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component UniformTypeIdentifiers. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the UniformTypeIdentifiers component in Apple OS X before 10.10.3 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted Uniform Type Identifier.

The weakness was published 04/08/2015 by Ole Andre Vadla Ravnas (lokihardt@ASRT) with Apple as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1144 since 01/16/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82699 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (FREAK)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123515 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.3 and Security Update 2015-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-04-08-2)).

Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (82699), SecurityFocus (BID 73982†), SecurityTracker (ID 1032048†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49483†).
