Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) in Hyper-V in Microsoft Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (VMM functionality loss) via a crafted application, aka "Windows Hyper-V DoS Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 04/14/2015 as MS15-042 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-1647 since 02/17/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82778 (MS15-042: Vulnerability in Windows Hyper-V Could Allow Denial of Service (3047234)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91043 (Microsoft Hyper-V Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS15-042)).
