A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in IBM Domino up to 9.0.1.3 (Groupware Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component GIF File Handler. IBM Domino 8.5 before 8.5.3 FP6 IF4 and 9.0 before 9.0.1 FP3 IF2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (integer truncation and application crash) via a crafted GIF image, aka SPR KLYH9T7NT9.
The weakness was disclosed 04/14/2015 by bilou with Zero Day Initiative as swg21701647 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-0135 since 11/18/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 77 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83114 (IBM Domino 9.0.x < 9.0.1 Fix Pack 3 Interim Fix 2 GIF Code Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 8.5.3 Fix Pack 6 Interim Fix 4 or 9.0.1 Fix Pack 3 Interim Fix 2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20348.
