The weakness was presented 04/18/2015 by Dan Caselden, Yasir Khalid, James “Tom” Bennett, GenWei Jiang, Corbin Souffrant, Joshua Homan, Jonathan Wrolstad, Chris Phillips and Darien Kindlund with FireEye as MS15-051 / Operation RussianDoll: Adobe & Windows Zero-Day Exploits Likely Leveraged by Russia’s APT28 in Highly-Targeted Attack / MS15-051 as confirmed article (Blog). The advisory is shared for download at fireeye.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-1701 since 02/17/2015. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

A public exploit has been developed by hfiref0x in Ruby and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at fireeye.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83370 (MS15-051: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (3057191)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91049 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS15-051)). This issue was added on 03/03/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 03/24/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Upgrading to version 8, 8.1 or Server 2012 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS15-051 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
