Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library (Software Library) (the affected version unknown) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function getanswer_r of the file /resolv/nss_dns/dns-host.c of the component DNS Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 04/21/2015 with Red Hat as confirmed patch (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-1781 since 02/17/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83865 (Debian DLA-230-1 : eglibc security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196484 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Eglibc, Glibc Vulnerabilities (USN-2985-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceware.org. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19687.
