Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9 TCP Session config

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9 (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component TCP Session Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a config vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-16. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 and 9, when the Proxy Settings configuration has the same Proxy address and Port values in the HTTP and Secure rows, does not properly reuse TCP sessions to the proxy server, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information intended for a specific host via a crafted HTML document that triggers many HTTPS requests and then triggers an HTTP request to that host, as demonstrated by reading a Cookie header, aka MSRC 12096gd.

The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 01/27/2013 by Christian Haider as not defined exploit (Pastebin). It is possible to read the advisory at pastebin.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1450 since 01/28/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592.004 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by Christian Haider and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at youtube.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1789 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Firefox, Chrome or Opera as an alternative.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81705), SecurityFocus (BID 57640†), OSVDB (89619†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38460†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-7510. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
