Details
A vulnerability was found in SQLite up to 3.8.8. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
SQLite before 3.8.9 does not properly implement the dequoting of collation-sequence names, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (uninitialized memory access and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted COLLATE clause, as demonstrated by COLLATE"""""""" at the end of a SELECT statement.
The weakness was published 04/24/2015 by Michal Zalewski (Website). The advisory is available at sqlite.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-3414 since 04/24/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82893 (FreeBSD : sqlite -- multiple vulnerabilities (dec3164f-3121-45ef-af18-bb113ac5082f)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350141 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for php54: ALAS-2015-561).
Upgrading to version 3.8.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (82893), SecurityFocus (BID 74228†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50699†).
