SQLite up to 3.8.8 printf.c sqlite3VXPrintf memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2015-3416. No exploit exists. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in SQLite up to 3.8.8. Affected is the function sqlite3VXPrintf of the file printf.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The sqlite3VXPrintf function in printf.c in SQLite before 3.8.9 does not properly handle precision and width values during floating-point conversions, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (integer overflow and stack-based buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via large integers in a crafted printf function call in a SELECT statement.

The weakness was disclosed 04/24/2015 by Michal Zalewski (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sqlite.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-3416 since 04/24/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83273 (Debian DSA-3252-1 : sqlite3 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350141 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for php54: ALAS-2015-561).

Upgrading to version 3.8.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (83273), SecurityFocus (BID 74228†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50700†). The entries VDB-69855, VDB-75130, VDB-75131 and VDB-76015 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
