Integer overflow in libstagefright in Mozilla Firefox before 38.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow and out-of-bounds read) via an MP4 video file containing invalid metadata.
The weakness was disclosed 05/12/2015 by Ucha Gobejishvili (laf.intel) with Intel as MFSA 2015-55 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-2717 since 03/25/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83389 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (d9b43004-f5fd-4807-b1d7-dbf66455b244)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167833 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2015:0934-1)).
Upgrading to version 38 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
