A vulnerability was found in eCryptfs up to 104. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component ecryptfs-utils. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-255. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
eCryptfs 104 and earlier uses a default salt to encrypt the mount passphrase, which makes it easier for attackers to obtain user passwords via a brute force attack.
The weakness was disclosed 03/16/2015 (Website). The advisory is available at bugs.launchpad.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-9687 since 02/27/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
