International Components for Unicode up to 55.0 common/ubidi.c resolveImplicitLevels memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-8146. Moreover, an exploit is present. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in International Components for Unicode up to 55.0. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function resolveImplicitLevels of the file common/ubidi.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The resolveImplicitLevels function in common/ubidi.c in the Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm implementation in ICU4C in International Components for Unicode (ICU) before 55.1 does not properly track directionally isolated pieces of text, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted text.

The weakness was disclosed 05/25/2015 by Pedro Ribeiro with Agile Information Security as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8146 since 10/10/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83345 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 14.10 / 15.04 : icu vulnerabilities (USN-2605-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171250 (OpenSUSE Security Update for icu (openSUSE-SU-2018:1422-1)).

Upgrading to version 55.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (43887), Tenable (83345), SecurityFocus (BID 74457†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52647†). The entries VDB-75528, VDB-77784, VDB-77884 and VDB-78101 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
