Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.x (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function get_matching_model_microcode of the file arch/x86/kernel/cpu/microcode/intel_early.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the get_matching_model_microcode function in arch/x86/kernel/cpu/microcode/intel_early.c in the Linux kernel before 4.0 allows context-dependent attackers to gain privileges by constructing a crafted microcode header and leveraging root privileges for write access to the initrd.
The weakness was published 05/27/2015 (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2666 since 03/20/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83178 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux-lts-trusty vulnerabilities (USN-2587-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123847 (CentOS Security Update for kernel Security Update (CESA-2015:1534)).
Upgrading to version 4.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (83178), SecurityFocus (BID 73183†), SecurityTracker (ID 1032414†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50324†).
