Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.10.4 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function sg_write of the file drivers/scsi/sg.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The sg_ioctl function in drivers/scsi/sg.c in the Linux kernel through 4.10.4 allows local users to cause a denial of service (stack-based buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a large command size in an SG_NEXT_CMD_LEN ioctl call, leading to out-of-bounds write access in the sg_write function.
The bug was discovered 03/20/2017. The weakness was disclosed 03/20/2017 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-7187 since 03/20/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99407 (Fedora 25 : kernel (2017-3a9ec92dd6)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157422 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2017-3535)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99407), SecurityFocus (BID 96989†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1038086†). The entries VDB-75570, VDB-93980, VDB-94739 and VDB-99320 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
