Xen 3.3.x through 4.5.x enables logging for PCI MSI-X pass-through error messages, which allows local x86 HVM guests to cause a denial of service (host disk consumption) via certain invalid operations.
The weakness was disclosed 06/02/2015 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-130 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-4105 since 05/27/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84167 (Debian DSA-3284-1 : qemu - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370035 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX201145)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
