A vulnerability has been found in strongSwan up to 5.3.1 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-4171 since 06/02/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84026 (Debian DSA-3282-1 : strongswan - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167875 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for strongswan (SUSE-SU-2015:1228-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
