Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was published 06/10/2015 with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-056 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-1687 since 02/17/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5192 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84053 (MS15-056: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (3058515)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100237 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS15-056)).
Applying the patch MS15-056 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19937.
