Cisco IOS XR up to 4.2.0 IPv6 Packet resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Cisco IOS XR 4.0.1 through 4.2.0 for CRS-3 Carrier Routing System allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NPU ASIC scan and line-card reload) via crafted IPv6 extension headers, aka Bug ID CSCtx03546.

The weakness was disclosed 06/11/2015 with Cisco as cisco-sa-20150611-iosxr as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-0769 since 01/07/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

The vulnerability is due to incorrect processing of an IPv6 packet carrying IPv6 extension headers that are valid but unlikely to be seen during normal operation. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending such an IPv6 packet to an affected device that is configured to process IPv6 traffic. An exploit could allow the attacker to cause a reload of the line card, resulting in a DoS condition.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84287 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is .

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling IPv6. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
