A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in XenSource Xen 4.2/4.3/4.4/4.5 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function GNTTABOP_swap_grant_ref. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The weakness was presented 06/11/2015 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-134 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-4163 since 06/02/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84169 (Debian DSA-3286-1 : xen - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
