OpenSSL up to 1.0.1c OSCP cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1c. The impacted element is an unknown function of the component OSCP Handler. This manipulation causes cryptographic issue. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2013-0166. No exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1c (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component OSCP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

OpenSSL before 0.9.8y, 1.0.0 before 1.0.0k, and 1.0.1 before 1.0.1d does not properly perform signature verification for OCSP responses, which allows remote OCSP servers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and application crash) via an invalid key.

The weakness was disclosed 02/05/2013 by Stephen Henson with Oracle as secadv_20130205.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at openssl.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0166 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69193 (VMSA-2013-0009 : VMware vSphere, ESX and ESXi updates to third-party libraries), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family VMware ESX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216063 (VMware ESXi 5.1.0 Patch Complete Update 2 Missing (KB2062314)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.1d eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81800), Tenable (69193), SecurityFocus (BID 57708†), OSVDB (89865†) and Secunia (SA52036†). The entries VDB-7284, VDB-7285, VDB-7286 and VDB-7292 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
