Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Fabrice Bellard QEMU (Virtualization Software) (affected version not known). This affects the function pit_ioport_read of the component PIT Emulation Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 06/17/2015 with Google as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3214 since 04/10/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85030 (CentOS 7 : qemu-kvm (CESA-2015:1507)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
