QEMU IDE Subsystem memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in QEMU. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component IDE Subsystem. The manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-5154. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version now known). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component IDE Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the IDE subsystem in QEMU, as used in Xen 4.5.x and earlier, when the container has a CDROM drive enabled, allows local guest users to execute arbitrary code on the host via unspecified ATAPI commands.

The weakness was shared 08/12/2015 by Kevin Wolf with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-5154 since 07/01/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/09/2022).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85030 (CentOS 7 : qemu-kvm (CESA-2015:1507)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168231 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2015:2003-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (85030) and SecurityFocus (BID 76048†). The entries VDB-75987, VDB-76323, VDB-76878 and VDB-76879 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
