The weakness was presented 07/07/2015 by Donghai Zhu as XSA-137 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3259 since 04/10/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. A authentication is required for exploitation. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84717 (FreeBSD : xen-tools -- xl command line config handling stack overflow (f1deed23-27ec-11e5-a4a5-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168231 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2015:2003-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
