A vulnerability was found in Citrix Xen up to 4.2.1 (Connectivity Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown function of the component Oxenstored Daemon. oxenstored in Xen 4.1.x, Xen 4.2.x, and xen-unstable does not properly consider the state of the Xenstore ring during read operations, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash and host-control outage, or memory consumption) or obtain sensitive control-plane data by leveraging guest administrative access.
The weakness was disclosed 02/05/2013 as msg00000 as not defined mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is available at lists.xen.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0215 since 12/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64650 (Fedora 17 : xen-4.1.4-4.fc17 (2013-2002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370047 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX136540)).
Applying the patch xsa38 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lists.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
