A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Adobe Flash Player up to 11.5.502.146 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in Adobe Flash Player before 10.3.183.51 and 11.x before 11.5.502.149 on Windows and Mac OS X, before 10.3.183.51 and 11.x before 11.2.202.262 on Linux, before 11.1.111.32 on Android 2.x and 3.x, and before 11.1.115.37 on Android 4.x allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted SWF content, as exploited in the wild in February 2013.
The weakness was released 02/08/2013 by Sergey Golovanov and Alexander Polyakov with Kaspersky Lab as apsb13-04 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at adobe.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0633 since 12/18/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74887 (openSUSE Security Update : flash-player (openSUSE-SU-2013:0279-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166685 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for flash-player (SUSE-SU-2013:0288-1)).
Upgrading to version 11.5.502.149 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12763.
