Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in PostgreSQL 9.2.2-1 (Database Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function enum_recy of the file backend/utils/adt/enum.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
PostgreSQL 9.2.x before 9.2.3, 9.1.x before 9.1.8, 9.0.x before 9.0.12, 8.4.x before 8.4.16, and 8.3.x before 8.3.23 does not properly declare the enum_recv function in backend/utils/adt/enum.c, which causes it to be invoked with incorrect arguments and allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (server crash) or read sensitive process memory via a crafted SQL command, which triggers an array index error and an out-of-bounds read.
The weakness was published 02/07/2013 by Sumit Soni with Secunia as 51923 as confirmed advisory (Secunia). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0255 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70906 (Amazon Linux AMI : postgresql8 (ALAS-2013-244)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350500 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for postgresql8: ALAS-2013-244).
Upgrading to version 8.3.23 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81917), Tenable (70906), SecurityFocus (BID 57844†), OSVDB (89935†) and Secunia (SA51923†). Similar entries are available at VDB-8170 and VDB-12483. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
