Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in PostgreSQL up to 9.3.3 (Database Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component Argument Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in PostgreSQL before 8.4.20, 9.0.x before 9.0.16, 9.1.x before 9.1.12, 9.2.x before 9.2.7, and 9.3.x before 9.3.3 allow remote authenticated users to have unspecified impact and attack vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2014-0063.
The weakness was presented 02/25/2014 with isen as Prevent potential overruns of fixed-size buffers as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-0065 since 12/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73059 (Amazon Linux AMI : postgresql8 (ALAS-2014-305)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350440 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for postgresql8: ALAS-2014-305).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
