PostgreSQL up to 9.3.3 chkpass.c crypt input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in PostgreSQL up to 9.3.3 (Database Software). This vulnerability affects the function crypt of the file contrib/chkpass/chkpass.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The chkpass extension in PostgreSQL before 8.4.20, 9.0.x before 9.0.16, 9.1.x before 9.1.12, 9.2.x before 9.2.7, and 9.3.x before 9.3.3 does not properly check the return value of the crypt library function, which allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and crash) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was shared 02/25/2014 by Bruce Momjian as Prevent potential overruns of fixed-size buffers as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0066 since 12/03/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73059 (Amazon Linux AMI : postgresql8 (ALAS-2014-305)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350780 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for postgresql8: AL2012-2015-051).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91458), Tenable (73059), SecurityFocus (BID 65728†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46171†). The entries VDB-12397, VDB-12398, VDB-12400 and VDB-12401 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
