A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in PostgreSQL up to 9.3.3 (Database Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the file doc/src/sgml/regress.sgml. The "make check" command for the test suites in PostgreSQL 9.3.3 and earlier does not properly invoke initdb to specify the authentication requirements for a database cluster to be used for the tests, which allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging access to this cluster.
The weakness was published 02/18/2014 by Noah Misch as Document risks of "make check" in the regression testing instructions. as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0067 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82167 (Debian DLA-19-1 : postgresql-8.4 update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350210 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for postgresql92: ALAS-2015-492).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
