A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 6.2.6/7.1.6/8.0.6 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Embedded PDF Handler. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the PDF functionality in WebKit in Apple Safari before 6.2.7, 7.x before 7.1.7, and 8.x before 8.0.7 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted URL in embedded PDF content.
The weakness was presented 06/30/2015 by Brad Hill with Facebook as HT20495 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-3660 since 05/07/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84491 (Mac OS X : Apple Safari < 6.2.7 / 7.1.7 / 8.0.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168651 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Security webkit2gtk3 (openSUSE-SU-2016:0761-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.2.7, 7.1.7 or 8.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
