Mozilla Network Security Services up to 3.18 TLS State Machine cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Network Security Services up to 3.18 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component TLS State Machine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) before 3.19, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 39.0, Firefox ESR 31.x before 31.8 and 38.x before 38.1, Thunderbird before 38.1, and other products, does not properly determine state transitions for the TLS state machine, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to defeat cryptographic protection mechanisms by blocking messages, as demonstrated by removing a forward-secrecy property by blocking a ServerKeyExchange message, aka a "SMACK SKIP-TLS" issue.

The weakness was disclosed 07/06/2015 by Karthikeyan Bhargavan (Paul) with Mozilla Developers (Website). The advisory is shared at smacktls.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2721 since 03/25/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84575 (Firefox ESR < 31.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X) (Logjam)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196175 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Nss Vulnerabilities (USN-2672-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.19 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84575), SecurityFocus (BID 75541†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50980†). The entries VDB-76278, VDB-76279, VDB-76280 and VDB-76281 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
