Use-after-free vulnerability in the CanonicalizeXPCOMParticipant function in Mozilla Firefox before 39.0 and Firefox ESR 31.x before 31.8 and 38.x before 38.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving attachment of an XMLHttpRequest object to a dedicated worker.

The weakness was disclosed 07/06/2015 by Karthikeyan Bhargavan (Paul) with Mozilla Developers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2733 since 03/25/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84550 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox (CESA-2015:1207)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167966 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox, mozilla-nss (openSUSE-SU-2015:1229-1)).

Upgrading to version 39.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
