The graphics component in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 and R2 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows RT Gold and 8.1 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application that leverages an incorrect bitmap conversion, aka "Graphics Component EOP Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 07/14/2015 as MS15-072 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2364 since 03/19/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84744 (MS15-072: Vulnerability in Windows Graphics Component Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (3069392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91070 (Microsoft Graphics Component Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS15-072)).
Applying the patch MS15-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20190.
