Apache CXF before 2.5.9, 2.6.x before 2.6.6, and 2.7.x before 2.7.3, when the plaintext UsernameToken WS-SecurityPolicy is enabled, allows remote attackers to bypass authentication via a security header of a SOAP request containing a UsernameToken element that lacks a password child element.

The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2013 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cxf.apache.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apache. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0239 since 12/06/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65544 (RHEL 5 / 6 : apache-cxf (RHSA-2013:0644)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.
