A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox 39 (Web Browser). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Maintenance Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 08/11/2015 as MFSA 2015-84 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-4481 since 06/10/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85338 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (c66a5632-708a-4727-8236-d65b2d5b2739)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168015 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2015:1389-1)).
Upgrading to version 40 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
